5 UNEXPECTED WAYS TO USE FACE MISTS
At Jurlique, we love a good face mist. Our Rosewater Balancing Mist, packed with the extract of our exclusive Jurlique Rose, has been one of our most popular products for years, and our range of mists has gained a loyal following of beauty enthusiasts the world over. As the post-cleanse step, our face mists are known for their hydrating and soothing properties and are a skin care ritual essential. But did you know that our Mists do more than hydrate the skin and can also be used throughout the day, outside of your skin care ritual? Read on for five unexpected ways to use a facial mist. Refreshing makeup Yes, our Mists can be used over your makeup without smudging it or causing it to run. If your foundation and concealer tend to look dry or flaky towards the end of the day, or you want a dewy look, spritz a hydrating Mist onto your face throughout the day. By giving your skin this moisture boost, you’ll prevent it (and your makeup) from drying out, helping to keep it looking fresh for as long as you need it to. Enhancing makeup pigments Speaking of makeup, lightly spraying your makeup brushes and sponges with your favourite facial spray can help deepen the pigments of products such as eyeshadow, blush and highlighting powders. This technique helps to enhance the drama and vibrancy of your look and can reduce the amount of product you need to use. Cooling the skin During summer on hot, humid days, or winter, if you’re exposed to a lot of central heating, our skin can sometimes feel like it needs a bit of cooling down. Use your face mist throughout the day to refresh and cool it. It will help soothe your skin upon contact and have a fresh, cooling effect as it evaporates. Controlling shine A face mist might not be the first product you think of when you want to control shine. But oiliness and shine can be byproducts of your skin overcompensating for dehydration by producing excess oil. Hydrating facial mists can help regulate oil production, as they prevent moisture loss and support the skin’s natural protective moisture barrier. If you have oily or blemish-prone skin, applying a face mist can help balance the skin and keep excess shine at bay.

When it comes to an effective skin care ritual, having the right products in your line-up is only half of it. The method of application also plays a big part, as it can affect the overall efficacy of your products. Avoiding excessively rubbing your skin and instead pressing in your product, which also makes them more effective and dramatically improves the condition of your skin. What is pressing/patting? Patting in your skin care products is a centuries old Japanese technique – a traditional ritual in which skin care products are gently patted or pressed onto the surface of the skin rather than tugging or rubbing. To use the pressing method simply: Apply a small amount of product to clean finger tips of one hand Gently rub both of your hands together to evenly distribute the product and as well as warm up the product Starting at your nose and working outwards gently press your product into your face. Press the product into your oiliest areas, like your T-Zone, last. Also gently press the product into your neck and décolletage until fully absorbed. Patting vs rubbing in skin care products One of the main benefits of pressing in your skin care products is that it significantly reduces pulling and tugging of skin. Our skin is one of our body’s most delicate organs and without realising it, excessive skin manipulation by rubbing can stretch the skin and break down collagen, in turn leading to advanced signs of ageing like sagging and wrinkles. From the vigorous use of makeup wipes to being heavy handed when applying moisturiser, all of that rubbing adds up. Pressing in your skin care products also allows the products to penetrate deeper without friction. Particularly around the area where rubbing in products and dragging the skin can cause irritation and inflammation. When should you press in your skin care products? Physical exfoliators and cleansers are the only products that should be rubbed into your face using gentle, circular motions: this motion helps activate the product and whisks away debris. For most of your skin care ritual steps you should practice pressing in your products. Misting/Essence: After cleansing your skin, use a toner or essence to restore hydration. Our Activating Water Essence is the essential step for every skin care ritual and is formulated to activate the skin’s ability to retain water and thus maximises the benefits of the products you apply afterwards. “Your skin is like a sponge, anything you put on top of a dry sponge will just sit there”, says Rebecca Nicholls, Jurlique Education Specialist. To enhance absorption, pour a couple of drops into your hand, gently rub your hands together to warm up the product and gently pat onto your face, neck and décolletage. Serum: Serums are a high-performance treatment step and usually packed with all the good stuff that helps improve your complexion. By pressing in your serum instead of rubbing, you’ll ensure that every juicy drop gets absorbed into your skin. Eye Cream: Your eye area is quite delicate so pulling and tugging is already a big no-no. Instead of patting with all of your fingers, use the tips of your ring fingers and gently take your time to pat the product under the eye area in until full absorbed. Moisturiser: When moisturising you can use the same patting technique as you would with your serum and essence step. But as a final technique you can also glide and smooth the moisturiser onto your skin. Moving from the middle of your face outward and using upward gliding motion on your neck and décolletage. Remember to be gentle and avoid any rubbing motion. A circular rubbing motion is mostly our default option when it comes applying skin care products. Even though it feels like it gets the job faster and we’ve been doing it this way since forever, the bottom line is that it’s not that great for our skin. When applying your skin care remember to try and take a mindful moment and really treat it like the luxurious ritual it is. Take your time as your press in your products. Your skin will thank you for it. Check out our step-by-step guide to the Jurlique skin care ritual. We recommend using the patting method to apply most Jurlique products including our bestselling Activating Water Essence. Explore our mists and essences and shop online now.

With a build-up of dirt throughout the day as well as exposure to pollution and daily aggressors, night time is probably the most important time to look after your skin. Skin repairs overnight - during sleep your skin’s circulation and blood flow increases and it will rebuild collagen and renew itself as much as possible - so it’s important to add hardworking products to your evening routine. For the best results, use products that are tailored to your skin concern - that way, you can give your skin the best chance to repair and rejuvenate while you sleep. Discover our nighttime skin care steps for every skin type below. Why you should use different skin care products at night Skin care isn’t one size fits all, and the same goes for using products for daytime vs nighttime. Our Victorian State Manager, Charlotte Lyon, says: “During the day our ritual is all about preparing for the day ahead and protecting our skin against moisture loss and environmental aggressors. Whereas at night it is all about recovering the skin from the day past and harnessing the power of natural botanicals to treat skin concerns and boost radiance in the skin. Double cleansing is a must at night and ensuring that you use serums and moisturisers that focus on optimal absorption to the skin, without creating too much of a barrier.” How to look after your skin at night 1. Cleanse Your skin goes through a lot during the day (makeup, sweat, pollution…the list is endless), so night time is the perfect time to give your face a deep clean. Look for a cleanser with a cream or gel base for an effective clean. 2. Apply a serum Thanks to their lightweight formulas that target specific skin care concerns, serums are an essential part of every ritual, plus they give your skin a much-needed boost of hydration. 3. Moisturise Moisturisers lock in hydration and act as a protective layer on your skin. At night, use a richer formula than you would during the day, that will nourish your skin while you sleep. 4. Apply an eye cream The skin around the eyes is delicate and prone to dryness. It’s also one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, so a nourishing eye cream or gel is important. What products to use for your skin concern Focus on rich, nourishing formulas and targeted treatments. The first step is identifying your skin type: do you have normal, dry, oily or combination skin? If you’re not sure, read our guide to understanding your skin type, then choose specially formulated products that address your skin care concerns too (Is your dry skin congested? Or is anti-ageing a big concern alongside oiliness?) Anti-ageing Skin with visible signs of ageing needs specially formulated products that work to help support collagen and elastin, which give skin its flexibility. For an anti-ageing skin care routine, or to combat the signs of fine lines and wrinkles, we recommend using Nutri-Define Supreme Cleansing Foam, Activating Water Essence+ and Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum, followed by Nutri-Define Supreme Restorative Rich Cream, which is our best night cream for ageing skin. Our Education Manager Charlotte says “as a booster during the week, or for particularly parched skin, add 1-2 drops of the Purely Age Defying Firming Face Oil to your moisturiser to help with elasticity and suppleness. Don’t forget to extend Serums/Creams/Oils to face, neck and décolletage.” Dry skin and hydration Dry skin can look dull and feel tight, dehydrated and rough to touch, so needs skin care products that will lock in hydration. Double cleanse skin first with either Replenishing Cleansing Lotion or Nourishing Cleansing Oil. Follow with our Activating Water Essence+, which is a great hydration booster for skin, and Rare Rose Serum and Cream, which have been clinically proven* to provide 24 hour hydration. Sensitivity Sensitive skin is easily irritated and prone to drying. It’s important to use specially formulated natural products that restore the skin’s protective barrier and calm and rebalance skin. Thoroughly remove the day using Replenishing Cleansing Lotion twice. The double cleanse will ensure any oils, bacteria or impurities that could exacerbate skin irritation - ensure to use lukewarm or tepid water. We recommend using our Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturising Cream, Calendula Redness Rescue Restorative Treatment Serum and Nurturing Mask to look after your skin at night. Oil and blemish control If oiliness and blemishes are your biggest concern, treat your skin to our Revitalising Cleansing Gel, which cleanses makeup, oil and impurities in one single step. Charlotte recommends misting with “Sweet Violet & Grapefruit Mist for immediate moisture and then use Activating Water Essence+ for continuous hydration. The lightweight, water-packed formulation is well loved by oily skin.” For a moisturiser, opt for our Rare Rose Lotion, which is lightweight and non-comedogenic. Puffiness and dark circles Our Nutri-Define Supreme Eye Contour Balm is our best eye cream for lines and puffiness. It uses Snowflake Bulb extract to help restore luminosity, while Alfalfa seed and lupine protein target the appearance of under-eye puffiness. Apply with the metal ball applicator included with the Eye Contour Balm, which helps to smooth, cool and depuff the eye area by aiding lymphatic drainage and promoting optimal absorption of the eye balm itself. FAQs What should a night skin care routine be? A simple night skin care routine should start with a double cleanse to thoroughly remove the day's impurities. Next, apply a serum tailored to your skin's concerns, followed by a rich night cream to hydrate and replenish your skin while you sleep. Gently pat on an eye cream around your delicate eye area to minimise dark circles and puffiness, and finish by applying a nourishing lip balm or treatment for soft, supple lips. What is good to apply on the face at night? At night, your skin shifts into repair mode, and this peaks while you sleep. Nighttime is the best time to address specific skin concerns like dullness, blemishes, dark circles or those elusive fine lines with targeted treatments. Follow with a rich, nourishing moisturiser to lock in maximum hydration. Remember to apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency for optimal absorption. What is the best serum for a night skincare routine? Our Herbal Recovery Bi-Phase Serum is a best-seller for a reason. Infused with Holy Basil, known as the “elixir of life", Iris root, Echinacea, Black Elderflower and potent antioxidants, this high-performing blend re-energises the skin for a smoother, softer and revitalised look. Read moreWHAT ARE NATURAL ACTIVES IN SKIN CARE?
If you’re a fan of skin care, chances are you’ve heard of retinol, ceramides and all kinds of acids…but knowing what they are, what they do and why you need them (beyond them sounding like something you’d hear in a chemistry lesson) is another thing entirely. These are the ‘actives’ that you’ll find in skin care products: the ingredient that has been scientifically proven to address the skin concern it’s meant to target. Inactive ingredients are important too, as they tend to be the ingredients that help deliver the active to your skin, such as water, or have cleansing or moisturising properties. At Jurlique, our products are natural based, which means our actives are too. Here are five natural actives you should look for.Rock Samphire ExtractAlso known as Sea Fennel or Crithmum maritimum extract, this natural marine extract has been nicknamed the ‘Retinol of the Sea’ for its ability to help firm the skin and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Skin care experts recommend retinol for skin thanks to its ability to aid skin cell turnover and boost collagen production. Rock Samphire extract can be found in Purely Age-Defying Firming Face Oil and Calendula Redness Rescue Mist.Willow Bark ExtractWillow Bark extract – or Salix nigra extract – is high in salicin, a natural salicylic acid which helps skin cell turnover by exfoliating the skin, as well as dissolve dirt and impurities which may clog pores. Willow Bark extract is also high in tannins, phenolic acids and flavonoids, which help reduce the signs of ageing and keep skin looking firm. Find it in Purely Age-Defying Refining Treatment, Purity Specialist Treatment Mask and Radiant Skin Foaming Cleanser.Cassia angustifolia Seed PolysaccharideAlso known as Senna Seed Polysaccharide, this natural active is a plant-derived form of hyaluronic acid, which is considered a powerhouse in skin care. The benefits of hyaluronic acid include its ability to keep skin moisturised, as well as improving skin elasticity. It occurs naturally in the body but like collagen and elastin, it decreases as we get older. The extract from these seeds forms a protective film on the skin that strongly binds water to provide intense moisturisation and reduce the signs of fine lines and wrinkles. Skin feels smoother and looks plumper. Find Cassia angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide in our Moisture Plus Rare Rose range.Tremella fuciformis PolysaccharideThis rare extract is considered nature’s hyaluronic acid, holding up to 500 times its own weight of water and creating a natural, flexible film that restores dry skin to is optimal hydrated state, improving skin elasticity and promoting a healthy appearance. Tremella fuciformis is also known as ‘snow mushroom’ and looks like a white gelatinous flower. Find it in Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum.Red Clover Flower ExtractRed Clover Flowers are grown on the Jurlique Farm and its extract has been scientifically proven to enhance the hydrating role of hyaluronic acid and smooth out the appearance of lines and wrinkles in our Herbal Recovery Signature Serum. You’ll also find Red Clover extract (or Trifolium pratense extract) in Purely Age-Defying Refining Treatment.
Read more7 TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR SKIN WHILE WEARING A FACE MASK
It’s safe to say that our lives have changed a lot in 2020. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has seen most people around the world endure lockdown measures, a new way of living and working from home. The way we interact with others has changed and day to day life has a very different lens – and face masks (no, not the skin care kind) are being worn on the regular, with medical experts stressing their importance to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. But with that can come negative effects for your skin, with some people experiencing problems such as breakouts – or ‘maskne’ - rashes and itchiness from wearing a mask. We spoke to our Education Manager Charlotte Lyon to get her top tips for looking after your skin while wearing a face mask. Why does wearing a face mask affect your skin?Firstly: why the new skin problems? Surely, we’ve all been through enough? According to dermatologist Dr. Adeline Kikam, friction from the mask rubbing can cause irritant contact dermatitis, and a build up of moisture from the air inside the mask can cause breakouts – not to mention the dirt and makeup that can get trapped underneath. How to prevent skin problems when wearing a face maskThe good news is, you can minimise those skin problems and keep your skin looking and feeling healthy while wearing a protective face mask. Here are our seven top tips:1. Avoid wearing makeupWearing makeup underneath your face mask is a bit like sleeping with your makeup on – it can clog the pores and cause those unwanted blemishes. Embrace natural and avoid wearing makeup where you can, opting instead for a hydrating skin care routine. If makeup is necessary, stick to the eye area only.2. Use a gentle cleanserCleansing is always important to get rid of any dirt, impurities and unblocked pores – which is more likely while wearing a mask. Cleanse your skin morning and night using a gentle cleanser that’s suitable for sensitive skin, such as our Replenishing Cleansing Lotion.3. Stay hydratedCharlotte tells us hydrated skin is important for preventing skin problems while wearing a mask. “Ensure to increase hydration levels of the skin using Activating Water Essence,” she says. “Our Hydrating Mists can be carried and used throughout the day, when able, to also help with dehydration.”4. Use a richer moisturiser“Dry skin is a common problem in winter and can be made worse by wearing a face mask,” says Charlotte. If you feel as though you’re not receiving enough nourishment from your regular moisturiser, switch to a richer formula, or add a couple of drops of face oil to your regular cream or lotion. For very dry skin, Moisture Replenishing Day Cream is a great option to provide a superior barrier to the skin.5. Reduce redness with soothing skin care productsSensitivity and redness can be a common side effect of wearing a mask, due to the mask rubbing on the skin. Try introducing soothing and calming products into your skin care ritual, such as those in our Calendula Redness Rescue range. Calendula Cream can be used topically for affected areas to help protect and comfort.6. Protect your lipsAs well as your skin, your lips can become dry and chapped when wearing a face mask regularly. Treat and protect the lip area by applying Lip Care Balm or Rose Love Balm throughout the day (using clean fingers!)7. Choose a face mask with natural fabricsNot all face masks are created equally. “Avoid synthetic fabrics, such as nylon, polyester and rayon,” says Charlotte. “These are more likely to irritate skin and cause breakouts.” Instead, choose a face mask that’s made from a natural and breathable fabric, such as cotton, and wash it with a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic laundry detergent. With a nourishing and hydrating skin care ritual, you should be able to minimise the problems that come with wearing a face mask. Keep your hands protected too, with a moisturising hand sanitiser and read our top tips for caring for your hands.

When your favourite skin care brand release a new skin care product or range, are you Type A and purchase the product right away and slather it all over? Or are you Type B and hesitant to purchase because it might exacerbate a skin concern you’ve worked hard to get under control? If you’re Type B, you most likely have sensitive skin. Whether you’re dealing with redness, irritation, or uneven skin tone, ongoing skin sensitivity can be challenging to deal with.At Jurlique, we believe in not only treating the symptoms of sensitivity, but also addressing the underlying causes and solving them through a combination of natural ingredients and a consistent skin care ritual. Read on for our top 3 tips for caring for sensitive skin and recommended skin care products for sensitive skin.1. Choose the right ingredientsNo matter what skin type you have, it’s a good idea to avoid synthetic chemical ingredients in your everyday skin care ritual. However, it’s especially important to have natural-based skin care for sensitive skin, as it may react poorly to many synthetic ingredients.Instead, opt for naturally derived ingredients that nourish and calm your skin, rather than aggravating it further. Ingredients to gravitate toward include:Calendula Flower Extract, has pronounced soothing properties and has been used to rebalance sensitivity on the skin and throughout the body.Chamomile Flower Extract, which carries calming and hydrating benefits. A great natural ingredient for both dry and combination sensitive skin types.Echinacea Extract is an astringent herb that offers soothing properties and can help balance the skinJurlique Rose extract, which can only be exclusively found in some Jurlique products, is scientifically proven to enhance the skin’s barrier function and help it retain essential moisture. You can find all of these ingredients in our Calendula Redness Rescue and Moisture Plus Rare Rose.2. Be gentle with you skinLet every action you make upon your skin be gentle and soft. While choosing the right products plays a part in managing sensitive skin, your skin care application techniques are equally important.Avoid any actions that tug your skin as this can make irritation worse. Here’s what that looks like in practice:If you wear makeup, instead of removing it with a makeup wipe, use a cleansing oil in gentle circular motion. When you follow up with a gentle cleanser, use those same delicate motions.During your moisturiser, serum or face oil step – pat and press the product in instead of rubbing. When you have sensitive skin, physical exfoliation can be intimidating, and you’d be right to proceed with caution. A lot of physical exfoliators are abrasive and can do more harm than good. Look for something non-abrasive like our Daily Exfoliating Cream – you apply it to your skin in a press-release motion (so no rough rubbing) and it gently lifts and removes dead skin and impurities.3. Keep it coolFor soothing sensitive skin, consider keeping your skincare products in the fridge until it’s time to apply them.Apart from the instant refreshing hit, there’s anecdotal evidence that the cooler temperature causes blood vessels to contract, immediately reducing the appearance of redness.Skin sensitivity is a challenge, but with the right skin care products and techniques, it can be managed. Read moreIS YOUR CLEANSER CAUSING YOUR BREAKOUTS?
Have you been experiencing unexplained breakouts recently? It might be due to the stress of the pandemic, lockdown and maskne (yes, it’s a real thing), but it might be something as simple as the cleanser you’re using. In fact, a lot of people breakout after using a new cleanser, which seems like an oxymoron…aren’t they supposed to clean your skin? Well, yes, but if you’re not using one that’s well-suited to your skin type, cleansers can cause a skin pH imbalance which results in irritation and can cause sudden breakouts. The best way to avoid it is to choose the best cleanser for your skin type and skin concerns. How can cleanser cause breakouts?A cleanser that is too harsh for your skin type can cause breakouts by disrupting the skin’s natural protective moisture barrier and stripping away essential oils and moisture. This can leave skin feeling dry, tight and vulnerable to oil imbalances, which can lead to breakouts. Your skin’s protective moisture barrier also prevents bacterial growth that can cause blemishes, so if it’s disrupted, that bacteria can flourish. The wrong cleanser can also disrupt the naturally acidic pH of your skin, making it more vulnerable to infection and damage. What cleanser should I use?So, it’s important to choose the right cleanser for radiant, healthy-looking skin. Pick a cleanser that suits your skin type and concern to start your skin care ritual off right (we recommend you use our Nourishing Cleansing Oil first and do a double cleanse at night to get rid of dirt and impurities):For dry, dehydrated skin: Our Replenishing Cleansing Lotion uses Marshmallow Root extract, Calendula Flower extract, and Shea butter to gently and deeply cleanse dry and sensitive skin while restoring moisture and soothing irritation. For oily skin: Thanks to Rosemary Leaf and Spilanthes extracts, our Revitalising Cleansing Gel refreshes skin and controls excess oil production and shine. For mature skin: Fight fine lines and other signs of ageing with our Nutri-Define Supreme Cleansing Foam, which uses Jojoba beads, Spilanthes and Horseradish extracts, and our signature Biosome6 blend to gently whisk away dead skin and smooth wrinkles. For combination skin: Reveal fresh, glowing skin with our Radiant Skin Foaming Cleanser, which harnesses the power of Calendula Flower, Willow Bark, and our exclusive Jurlique Rose extracts to remove impurities, unclog pores, and balance oil production.Choosing the right cleanser can protect your skin and ensure it stays radiant and blemish-free.
