“Roses connect you to nature – to beauty within. They are the queen of plants when it comes to skin care.”– Ulrike Klein, co-founder of JurliqueThe heritage Roses grown at our biodynamic† farm have been at the heart of our skin care bestsellers ever since Jurlique began. Many of our most beloved products continue to harness our pure Roses to uplift the senses and enrich the skin.Roses were one of the very first flowers planted by our founders, Jurgen and Ulrike Klein, back when they started the first Jurlique Farm at Ngeringa in 1985. Today, we grow six varieties of old-style David Austin roses at the Jurlique Farm.“When we started to create the first Jurlique skin care range, there was no question that the Rose would be at the forefront of whatever we did,” Ulrike explained recently. “It would be one of the main ingredients.”Rose PetalsIt was not just the knowledge that Roses have excellent hydrating, soothing and enhancing qualities that led our founders to make it a major part of our skin care, Ulrike said, “When I go back in my mind to the gardens that were around me where I grew up, all the plants were Roses – not hybrids, but old Roses, with this amazing scent. So I’ve always had an innate connection to Roses.”According to Ulrike, scent plays a critical role in making our Rose skin care more than simply beauty products. “The whole idea of Jurlique was not to create beauty products. It was about our dream to connect people back to nature. That’s the really important thing for us as human beings. How can we connect to ourselves? How can we connect our customers back to nature? And the Rose is right at the top of that.”“The essential oil of the Rose connects you to nature, to beauty within. It refreshes; it enlivens. It makes you feel alive. It makes you feel positive.“And it’s this connection that our Rose products create to the customer within that is the secret of their success.”Shop the story: Rose Moisture Plus RangeRose Moisture Plus Range† Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Read moreMEET THE MOTHERS AMONGST US!
There are iconic women who transform our world all around us. This Mother’s Day we wanted to celebrate those we sit amongst. We spoke to some of the inspirational women in our Sydney office to understand how they nourish, how they balance work and home life and how their own mothers have inspired them. Anna, Marketing Director - ANZ Mother to Dayne & Mila How do you nourish your skin? I think masks are such a wonderful way to give my skin a boost, or treat a particular issue. My favourites are Purity Specialist Treatment Mask, to deeply cleanse and smooth, and Intense Recovery Mask to revitalise. Has the concept of 'beauty' changed for you since becoming a mother? Absolutely. Having a child, you instantly become the whole world for this tiny person and dedicate yourself fully and unconditionally to them. Well, at least the first few years. The notion of beauty evolved for me to become more holistic, to focus on inner beauty rather than my looks. Motherhood does that to you, it puts your whole life in perspective. What’s your morning ritual? I always start with a cleanser to wash off all the dirt and impurities. My favourite is our Nourishing Cleansing Oil, it has an amazing texture and fragrance. My skin is left feeling soft and smooth. Another must have is Jurlique’s Activating Water Essence, which is a delight to use and it makes my moisturiser work harder and last longer, it makes such a big difference to my skin. How do you balance family life with work life? The short answer is I don’t. I just go with the flow while my kids are young and enjoy the ride. It gets super busy and exhausting at times, but it’s worth it! I had to become much more organised and make sure I plan for all weekly meals ahead, coordinate my work travel with my partner and book the babysitter months in advance. What is something your mother always said to you? Mum used to say: “Anna, in this life you can only be successful if you believe in yourself”. A notion that helped me at different stages of my life when my self-esteem was low. What do you wish for your children? I wish for them to be happy, loved and try to make this life better for all beings around them too. It’s probably a bit ambitious but I’m sure they can give it a go. Aimee, Design Lead – Global Mother to Willow and now, at the time of publishing, 4-week-old Charli Who’s your everyday icon? I have the hugest admiration for Saskia Havekes, founder of Grandiflora. We have been so fortunate to collaborate with her on some of our campaigns over the past few years. I am truly astounded and inspired by the way she has created an internationally recognized business empire, whilst remaining one of the most hard-working, gracious, kind and gentle women I have ever met – all whilst raising two daughters. How do you nourish your skin? At the time of answering this, I am a few weeks away from meeting our second child – and I feel like I literally can’t get enough moisture into my skin – GIVE ME ALL THE OILS AND MASKS! I use Jurlique’s Skin Balancing Face Oil every day, layering it under moisturiser and also mixing it with foundation – my skin literally drinks it up! I also love our Rose Moisture Plus Moisturising Cream Mask. I love that when used overnight, your skin looks refreshed and hydrated in the morning. I am going to keep this one especially close over the upcoming months! How has your own mother inspired you? My mum has always been my biggest supporter and cheerleader. She has brought me up to believe that I have something unique to offer the world, BUT that if I want to make a difference, it’s up to me to go out and do it. 15 years ago, she set up a business in Cape Town, South Africa, creating art out of recycled tea-bags. The business now supports more than 20 individuals from an informal settlement. It is testament to her unwavering desire to create a positive impact in the world through the talent she has been blessed with. Has the concept of 'beauty' changed for you since becoming a mother? I feel like since having a little one, ‘beauty’ has become a way for me to reconnect to myself as ‘Aimee’ and not ‘mummy’. I feel energized and able to take on the world when I have washed hair, skin care and make up on and I am out of my tracksuit pants! What’s you must have beauty product? Jurlique’s Skin Balancing Face Oil How do you balance family life with work life? My husband and I regularly challenge ourselves and each other to focus on work when we’re at work but then remain present when we’re at home, but we don’t always get it right. What do you wish for your children? That they find a sense of purpose and through that, happiness. Above all, I hope they are kind and gracious, to themselves and others. Also, I hope they always come over for weekly dinners even when their Dad and I are old and uncool! Bertha, Visual Merchandising Manager – ANZ. Mother to Audrey and Eliza. How do you nourish your skin? By drinking lots of water and making sure I always do a mask every week no matter how busy life gets! How has your own mother inspired you? My mother passed away last year. She was always thinking of others, even up until the end of her life. So, I try to always put myself in other’s shoes and do what’s best by others. Has the concept of 'beauty' changed for you since becoming a mother? I try to be a role model for my girls. I want them to know that all women are beautiful no matter what we look like on the outside. As a mother, beauty for me is not physical but how we take a moment to appreciate everything around us – nature, people and how we are all connected. What’s your morning ritual? Apart from ushering the kids around and making ham and cheese sandwiches, I make sure that I take 10 minutes for myself. I cleanse my skin, followed by Activating Water Essence and Calendula Redness Rescue Restorative Treatment Serum. Then I use the Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Cream followed by the Skin Balancing Face Oil as a moisturiser. I make sure I do all the steps, as it’s the only time in the day I get to focus on my skin. What’s your must have beauty product? My Jurlique Rose Silk Finishing Powder, it’s changed my life! How do you balance family life with work life? I am very lucky to work at a company that respects and encourages work and family balance, which makes it much easier to be a full-time working mum. I make sure that I am there for most of my girl’s school performances and that I actually switch off the emails as soon as I am home…or at least not look them till the next morning on the train! What is something your mother always said to you? “Don’t take on everything yourself – ask for help when you need it.” What do you wish for your children? I want my girls to be happy, healthy and have a positive outlook on life. There is so much beauty all around us and I don’t think we take enough time to appreciate it. Nicole, Brand Manager - ANZ Mother to Zoe How do you nourish your skin? Days have been a little more hectic since becoming a mother 5 months ago, but I make sure, at the very least, that I hydrate with Activating Water Essence and Herbal Recovery Signature Moisturising Cream every morning and night. If I have an extra few minutes, I use the Herbal Recovery Signature Serum and Herbal Recovery Signature Eye Cream. I also squeeze in a Purity Specialist Treatment Mask or Intense Recovery Mask every week. How has your own mother inspired you? Her work ethic and strength are so inspiring. She is amazing. Has the concept of 'beauty' changed for you since becoming a mother? I think I feel more beautiful now as a mother, than I ever have. Beauty seems more tied with happiness than my physical appearance. What’s you must have beauty product? Activating Water Essence is my holy grail! How do you balance family life with work life? At the moment I get to enjoy all the time with my beautiful girl, Zoe, as I am on maternity leave. I will worry about the balance when I need to. What is something your mother always said to you? “Don’t waste time worrying about things that are out of your control.” How do you relax and reconnect with yourself at the end of a busy week?A walk around the block, a hot bath and a face mask. What do you wish for your children? I wish Zoe a lifetime of infinite love, happiness and friendship! Strength when she needs it and to keep her beautiful little smile. It’s not every day you get your very own rose, a variety that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. But that’s exactly what we’ve got at Jurlique. In 2015, we decided we wanted something special to celebrate our 30th anniversary - something that would encapsulate who we are. It could only be one thing: a rose, arguably our most iconic ingredient. It couldn’t just be any old rose, though. Like Jurlique itself, this rose had to be unique. It had to be grown on our farm in the Adelaide Hills, and it had to be of the best possible quality. This is where George Thomson came in. A renowned rose breeder based in South Australia, George first bred this variety of rose in 2014. With a unique highly-perfumed scent, oil extract that’s super-hydrating, beautiful soft pink colour and large, abundant petals, we knew straight away that this rose was The One. It’s been growing exclusively on the Jurlique Farm ever since and you’ll now find Jurlique Rose extract in our Rosewater Balancing Mist and Moisture Plus Rare Rose collection. We sat down with George to find out more. George’s first brush with growing produce goes back to his childhood in north east Scotland, where his father bred potatoes. This sparked an interest in George that would lead to a lifetime of botany in various guises, first at the University of Dundee where he studied Botany and Chemistry, then to a stint at Kew Gardens in London, and then – after a brief hiatus which saw him spend three years in the British Army and SAS – in Australia, where his dedication to rose breeding began. The year was 1960 and for the next 20 years, George would breed roses, trying to sell his varieties to various companies, all while juggling his other job as a dairy farmer. “It was a struggle early on. From the 1960s to about 1980 nearly, I was on my own doing it”, says George. “But since about 1990 I’ve really come into my own.” The reason it took so long? “From the day you pollinate the flower until the day that you put the variety on the market, it takes about 10 years. You could die and eight years later you’re still bringing out new roses. Isn’t that wonderful?” There’s also the fact that Australian roses haven’t always had a great reputation. “Rose breeding in this country has been a real struggle because of the power invested in the importers. A lot of people think Australian bred roses are no good. Sadly, it’s a mentality thing and I find that very frustrating. In fact, there have been a couple of times when I really felt like throwing the towel in and doing something else. But then I thought, ‘well, so what? I’ll breed roses for myself’. George persevered and after decades of trying and pushing through the prejudice, became one of the most revered rose breeders in South Australia. And now, he says, his roses would outperform any that are imported into the country, thanks to them being specially bred for the heat and dry conditions. When it comes to breeding, George chooses the best female plants (the ones that produce the best seeds), a skill that he’s refined over the years. “Like all breeding, the female line is the most important. It’s not random by any means, what I do is known as line breeding. It’s quite easy to go astray because you’re using so many different varieties, so I keep records. “You’ve got to prepare the plants. You get the flower when it’s just starting to open, say just slightly above the bud stage. You then rip all the petals off and leave the stigma in the centre, which is the female part. About the same time, you take whatever pollen you want to use off a different variety, keep the stem end and put them in a dish at room temperature. After 24 hours it will drop pollen - you simply use your finger to dip in the pollen and put it on the female part you prepared the day before. “I don’t cover them or anything like that. Once you take the petals off, the bees aren’t interested, so you don’t get cross pollination. Roses also don’t pollinate through wind either, so it’s very accurate.” As for the Jurlique Rose, George says it took quite a bit of work (and luck) to get it to how it is today: a large, soft pink flower, with hardly any thorns - making it easier for our farm workers to handle - and the “most perfumed” rose he’s ever bred. The way that George has dedicated most of his life to breeding roses – despite the setbacks, despite the challenges, and despite, in his own words “not making a lot of money” (in fact, he donates a lot of his roses to charity) - is testament to his passion for the flower and a pure love for what he does. At 82, he’s “supposed to be retired” but will carry on breeding roses for as long as possible. And, of course, there’s the work he still does with Jurlique. Since the Jurlique Rose first arrived on our farm in 2015, he’s been educating our farm staff in pruning and feeding the roses, passing on his extensive knowledge so his passion can live on for generations to come. Read more5 WAYS PLANTS CAN BOOST YOUR SKIN HEALTH
One of the best (and easiest) ways to liven up an interior is with the addition of plants. But it’s not just a positive aesthetic effect that plants have – they’ve been proven to boost our mood, promote positivity and, it turns out, being surrounded by all that lush greenery is good for the skin, too (after all, there’s a reason why many skin care products are packed with botanicals). Here are five ways that plants can help you to maintain healthy, glowing skin. INDOOR PLANTS HYDRATE SKIN Indoor plants increase the moisture in the air, which means they help to combat dry, thirsty skin and reduce symptoms like flakiness (especially helpful in winter, when the contrast between the cold air and indoor heating can quickly dry out skin). The best indoor plants for this are those with large canopies that require lots of water to survive, such as Peace Lily and Ivy. PLANTS PURIFY THE AIR – AND YOUR SKIN Houseplants capture dust and particles from the air and can reduce the amount of pollution in the air. Thanks to their purifying qualities, plants also reduce our exposure to indoor toxins that can cause premature ageing, acne, dryness and dullness, as when our toxic burden is too big, the skin struggles to flush out toxins as quickly as it should. For the best air-purifying plants, go for the Snake Plant, Dracena or Fiddle Leaf Fig. ALOE VERA CAN SOOTHE AND MOISTURISE SKIN Aloe Vera has long been used for its soothing properties. That’s because it’s rich in vitamins A, C and E, making it a natural moisturiser – plus, it can also help protect the skin from free radicals. Keep an Aloe Vera plant at home and carefully crack open the leaves to scoop out the gel and apply it directly to the skin whenever you need it (bonus: this is a low-maintenance plant and only needs watering once every three weeks). Or for skin care that already harnesses the power of Aloe Vera, try our Aloe Vera Hydrating Mist. SOME HERBS CAN ENHANCE YOUR SKIN HEALTH Herbs aren’t just great for cooking – some may be full of skin-loving ingredients, too. Powerful herbs include Mint, which contains salicylic acid to clear pores, Sage, which is full of antioxidants to help clear congestion and mop up excess oil and Chamomile, an anti-inflammatory that can alleviate irritation caused by skin sensitivity. Try crushing up the fresh herbs and adding them to your bath. ROSE IS PACKED WITH BEAUTY BENEFITS Rose is our signature botanical for a reason. It hydrates, soothes and tones the skin for a more radiant complexion, and rosewater can help to tone the skin while maintaining its pH and oil balance. Not just that, but Rose oil hydrates and rebalances skin, strengthens its natural barrier and helps protect it from environmental aggressors. Reap the benefits by having a Rose bush indoors or out, and enhance the results with rose-infused skin care products such as Rosewater Balancing Mist and Rare Rose Serum.Plants: they’re pretty powerful. Fill your home with your favourites and use high-performing botanicals on your skin too. Shop our full range here.

Perhaps it’s the ‘Greta Thunberg effect’, or first-hand experiences of the effects of climate change, but collectively, we’re more conscious of our impact on the environment than ever before – most notably seen in the 7.6 million people around the globe who protested for climate action at the now-famous climate strikes during September 2019. At Jurlique, sustainability has always been at the heart of we do – it’s part of the reason we have a biodynamic* farm to grow our botanicals and we’re striving to make changes wherever possible to reduce our environmental impact. It’s not just us, either. We’re inspired by fellow Australian brands who are leading the way and flying the flag for sustainable beauty – ensuring that we don’t just look after ourselves, but we look after the planet too. That’s why beauty brand IMBIBE, which produces bio-fermented and bio-active health supplements (think collagen powders and multi-strain probiotics designed to improve skin health) continues to be a source of inspiration for us. Here’s how we’re both working towards more sustainable practices. INGREDIENTSAt Jurlique, we grow most of our botanicals on our biodynamic* farm in South Australia. We believe biodynamic* farming practices help us to grow the purest, best quality herbs we can which are hand harvested at a time when they’re full of life and vitality. These herbs are then utilised to make extracts that form the basis of Jurlique products, meaning you get the best from each ingredient we use. And it’s not just your skin. We believe by following biodynamic* farming techniques, we’re harnessing all the positive, living energies from Nature, as well as farming in the most sustainable way possible (find out more about our sustainable farming practices here). As for IMBIBE, the brand doesn’t use any fillers, fake flavourings or ingredients that they can’t pronounce, ensuring that they know what we are consuming into our bodies. RECYCLABLE PACKAGINGSince 2016, we’ve changed the packaging materials of our best-selling hand creams from aluminium to plastic tubes, which has led to an approximately 28% lower impact on our environment. We are also actively looking into ways to reduce the amount of material we use and increase the use of recyclable skin care packaging in order to reduce our carbon footprint. In partnership with global recycling pioneers Terracycle, we encourage our customers to recycle their empty Jurlique products via post or in our Jurlique standalone boutiques across Australia. All empty Jurlique packaging including pump bottles of Rosewater Balancing Mist, droppers and sachet foil wrappings can be recycled! Since initiating this program, we have collected 22,000 units (or 0.5 tonnes) of packaging. IMBIBE has been offering products such as its Miracle Collagen and Beauty Renewal Probiotic Supplement in glass jars and is soon moving onto fully certified compostable packaging. They are also reducing waste and plastic, meaning there will no longer be a scoop included in the Collagen Jars, nor a measuring cup with the Beauty Renewal. And if you find yourself in the Byron Bay area, you can pop into the IMBIBE warehouse anytime with your existing container for a refill to reduce packaging consumption even further. THE CARBON CYCLEWe care for our planet. Our goal is to analyse and reduce our environmental impact through the whole supply chain. We have moved the majority of our shipment from air-freight to sea-freight, which offers significant emissions savings. Since 2015, this freight management initiative has enabled us to reduce approximately 20% of emissions from transport. At IMBIBE, the brand uses 100% compostable and biodegradable packing for shipping all online orders. If you do receive a parcel from IMBIBE that contains soft plastics, it’s from goods they have received and re-used. Additionally, they send their orders using a carbon neutral courier service. We may still be far away from saving the planet and there’s a lot more we can do, but we’re committed to improving our sustainability practices and championing the other eco-friendly beauty brands that are doing the same. We hope that you, as a consumer, take action and support sustainable beauty and skin care products with us.

This Lunar New Year, you may see a bit of a difference in two of our most-loved products: Activating Water Essence and Rose Body Oil. While the same nourishing and hydrating formulas are on the inside, the outside has been taken over by hand-drawn botanicals. Red and gold illustrations weave across the bottles, as well as the cartons that contain them, making these limited editions extra special.Australian botanicals – Gum Blossom and Wattle – are blended with traditional Chinese flowers of Peach Blossom, Peonies and Orchid, which represent prosperity and growth, richness and peace, and abundance, respectively. It’s a rich and multilayered design you could get lost in, revealing something new every time you look at it. Bottles of illustrated Activating Water Essence and Rose Body Oil on top of illustrated botanicals The woman behind these unique illustrations is Adriana Picker, the Australian artist whose lifelong love of botanicals comes through in every stem she draws, every petal she shapes and every stroke her paintbrush makes. With an upbringing in NSW’s Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley, Adriana has been surrounded by nature and botanicals since her early childhood – something which is evident in her illustrative style (which she describes as “lush, detailed, densely saturated, romantic”).It’s a source of inspiration that continues to grow, too. After heading to Sydney for university, she now lives on the other side of the world in New York and while that may not be the first place that conjures up images of flowers and nature, Adriana still manages to seek them out.In lieu of the coast, or her family’s garden back in the Hunter, she often spends her spare time in the New York Botanical Garden, which she describes visiting whilst donning bright dresses and a bucket hat – a stark contrast to the other visitors who, at twice her age, tend to be dressed head-to-toe in that dark New Yorker uniform. You only need to take a quick look at her past work (she counts Vogue, Gourmet Traveller and T2 amongst her clients – and she can now add Jurlique to that roster) to see that botanicals have played a huge influence in her career as an artist. On top of her work with Vogue and the like, Adriana has illustrated three books: The Garden of Earthly Delights, Where the Wildflowers Grow, and The Cocktail Garden which she cites as a career highlight - “it’s entirely thrilling to stumble across your name on the front cover of a book in a place you’ve never visited before!” Adriana Picker laughing in rose garden She has also dipped her nib into the film world, illustrating costumes for high-profile productions such as The Great Gatsby, Mad Max: Fury Road and Hacksaw Ridge. But despite her success and name-dropping credentials, Adriana is relaxed, friendly and down to earth. She’s not precious about her work but really enjoys watching how the brands she partners with interpret her illustrations, and in her own words she loves “nerding out” over botanicals (she’s currently enrolled on a course to expand on her knowledge).Aside from nature, her sources of inspiration extend to other creative women that surround her. “Their career achievements further my ambition and their support pushes me forward. I am lucky enough to count within my close circle such talented women as designer Silvana Azzi Heras, photographer Nikki To, producer Rachel Fung, CEO and founder Meggie Palmer and many more!”Between juggling clients, drawing and “nerding out”, it’s safe to say Adriana Picker is a busy woman - but she still manages to find ways to unwind in her every day. “At the moment I ride a citi bike to and from work in Dumbo. The path there is along the east river and takes me through some lovely parkland by the water. In the evening the glorious sun sets over Manhattan and I am reminded of living by the water in Sydney. I also really enjoy a nap.”A woman after our own heart.Discover more of Adriana Picker’s work on her website and shop our Lunar New Year 2020 Rose Body Oil Limited Edition and Activating Water Essence Limited Edition to take a piece of her work home.

At Jurlique, powerful botanicals, grown on our biodynamic farm in the Adelaide Hills, form the basis of our products. Each one is chosen for its skin-benefiting properties – it could be naturally brightening, hydrating, soothing or smoothing, and, we believe, look after your skin in the best possible way. One such botanical is Spilanthes. Native to Brazil, this plant is grown in our specially-built greenhouses on our farm, which simulate the hot and humid conditions that Spilanthes flowers need to flourish in. The seeds are planted in August and the flowers are harvested between December and May, the hottest season in Australia. As with all the other botanicals that we grow, Spilanthes are grown biodynamically. There’s a lot that goes into biodynamic* farming, but one element is that it uses the sun, moon, stars and planets of earth to bring about balance and healing - that means harvesting exclusively on days that align with the appropriate moon cycle. Spilanthes are picked on days when the moon passes through the “Air and Light” signs of Libra, Gemini and Aquarius; these stages of the moon cycle favour development of flowers, substance and colour through influence over the air, making it the optimal time to harvest. It’s a flower that we’ve had since the early days of Jurlique. Our founder Ulrike Klein discovered Spilanthes in Brazil in the 1980s and soon realised its high potency. In fact, all the Spilanthes flowers on our farm come from that very first imported seed back in the ‘80s. Thanks to the care that our farm workers put into each seed, we haven’t had to buy any new seeds since. We’ve always known that Spilanthes is a special plant. Firstly, it’s traditionally known as the ‘toothache plant’, due to its mouth-numbing ability when chewing (our team on the farm tell us that the actual flower heads make your fingers tingly, so they’re careful not to touch their eyes after they have been hand picking flowers as they have that numbing effect). Secondly, Spilanthes extract has a soothing effect on the skin. But it’s only recently that we’ve discovered it can also promote skin’s collagen production by up to 46%i, one of the key factors in preventing the appearance of ageing – which is exactly why it’s one of the key ingredients in our new anti-ageing Nutri-Define range. Discover the power of Spilanthes with Nutri-Define at Jurlique. * Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia. Jurlique’s products and farm are not certified or affiliated with Demeter® USA or Demeter International.
