Unwrap our nature-inspired rituals
In a season defined by giving, how we wrap our gifts speaks just as loudly as what’s inside. This holiday season, we’re embracing a more thoughtful way to wrap, one that's eco-conscious, meaningful, and with a history that dates back over a thousand years.
With every fold and tie, furoshiki invites us to slow down, honour the ritual of giving, and share something that lasts well beyond the moment it’s opened. Find out more about this unique tradition.
What are Furoshiki?
Furoshiki are traditional Japanese wrapping cloths used to carry and carefully present items. Unlike single-use wrapping paper, furoshiki cloths are reusable, versatile and eco-friendly, making them a thoughtful alternative for the modern gift-giver.
Furoshiki come in a variety of materials, from luxurious silk to cotton, rayon, canvas or eco-friendly, upcycled fabrics. Beautiful in their simplicity, these traditional wrapping cloths align perfectly with our belief in intentional living and sustainable choices.
The History of Furoshiki
With roots dating back over 1,200 years, furoshiki, translated as bath (furo) spread (shiki), began in ancient Japan as a practical way to wrap and protect treasured items. Over time, this simple square cloth evolved, used by nobles to carry clothing, bathhouse visitors to bundle belongings, and merchants as early shopping bags. Though it faded from everyday use with the rise of plastic, furoshiki has returned in recent years. Embraced for its reusability and versatility, today, it reflects a lifestyle of intention, creativity and sustainability—values that feel more relevant than ever.
Why Choose Furoshiki?
A single cloth can be transformed in countless ways, today as gift wrapping, tomorrow as a stylish handbag accessory, a shopping bag or even a hair scarf. Furoshiki turns wrapping into a ritual. One that invites the giver and the receiver to slow down and appreciate the meaning behind the moment.
How to Wrap Furoshiki
Furoshiki wrapping is easier than it looks. Here’s a simple way to try it:
● Lay the cloth flat in a diamond shape. Place your gift in the centre.
● Fold the bottom corner up over the gift.
● Fold the top corner down over the gift.
● Bring the two side corners together and tie a firm, neat knot in the centre.
● Adjust as needed, tuck the edges or add a botanical sprig for a finishing touch.
And just like that, you’ve created a gift that’s as considered on the outside as it is within.
Jurlique’s Furoshiki for Conscious Gifting (TBC)
To celebrate the beauty of thoughtful wrapping, Jurlique is embracing this tradition by creating limited-edition furoshiki wraps as a complimentary gift for the first 100 customers at our QVB boutique in Sydney.
Each wrap features a bespoke botanical print inspired by Australian flora, created in collaboration with Aussie artist Steph Brooke. Thoughtfully designed and easy to reuse, it’s a meaningful nod to our farm-grown heritage and a keepsake you’ll want to hold onto long after the celebrations are over.
