A GUIDE TO NATURAL VS. SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS IN ANTI-AGEING SKIN CARE

A GUIDE TO NATURAL VS. SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS IN ANTI-AGEING SKIN CARE

As consumers we’re becoming more switched on than ever about what we’re putting onto our skin. In the beauty sphere, the course of natural skin care in Australia has boomed. When it comes to anti-ageing skin care, it can be difficult picking the right product(s) and regimen that’s best for you, let alone working out if you’re team natural or team synthetic. Is organic skin care really better? Are natural ingredients less powerful? What are safe synthetics? Here’s our guide to answer some of those questions about natural skin care vs synthetic skin care and also go through the best ingredients for anti-ageing. NATURAL ANTI-AGEING INGREDIENTS FOR SKIN To have a product boast being natural is alluring without a doubt. But it’s important to be wary as not all-natural ingredients are good, non-GMO or ethically sourced. At Jurlique we take the uncompromising task to preserve the integrity of nature and challenge what’s possible form natural skin care.AntioxidantsAntioxidants are a broad category of natural ingredients and include essential fatty acids like Rosehip Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. All of these ingredients boost collagen naturally, aid moisture retention and fight environmental aggressors. Grapeseed oil reduces fine lines, Avocado Oil nurtures the skin, while Rosehip Oil is rich in essential fatty acids and known for its restorative properties. You can find this antioxidant-rich blend of botanical oils in our Herbal Recovery Antioxidant Face Oil. A few drops mixed in with your moisturisers will revitalise your complexion and minimise the first signs of ageing.Plant extractsPreserving the integrity of nature by harnessing potent plant extracts for skin is at the heart of what we do at Jurlique. This is why we use our Bio-Intrinsic™ method, an alchemistic process that involves three stages where all the powerful ingredients from plants and herbs are extracted - the essence and life force of the plant is captured to deliver a magnified plant extract powerful enough to enhance the beauty of your skin. Our Herbal Recovery Eye Cream harnesses potent plant extracts and is clinically proven to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.iThe Yarrow Extract from our Jurlique farm in our Herbal Recovery Signature Serum also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a firmer, smoother, and more youthful appearance.Advanced natural technologiesAs we get older, a targeted skin care routine is essential. At Jurlique we challenge the orthodoxies of natural skin care by fusing science and natural ingredients to create high performing, potent skin care for healthy beautiful skin. With our new reformulated anti-ageing Nutri-Define range, we fuse our most advanced, next generation Biosome6 Technology with the power of nature. Our Biosome6 Technology is an exclusive Jurlique liposome that delivers active natural ingredients deeper into the layers of ageing skin. 75% of women said their skin was more visibly youthful and 89% noticed a visible improvement in overall appearance of skin.iiSkin superfoodsThis category includes natural ingredients that are so effective they deserve a mention. Spilanthes extract helps promote collagen production, making it a powerful anti-ageing ingredient. Horseradish also boosts collagen production and helps minimise the appearance of skin discolouration. With 1-2 pumps of our Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum followed by Nutri-Define Supreme Eye Contour Balm and your choice of either Nutri-Define Supreme Restorative Rich Cream or Light Cream, these key ingredients will target key ageing concerns like loss of elasticity, uneven skin tone and wrinkles leaving you with luminous, redefined, youthful skin. Open skin care bottles sitting on a grey counter SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS Using synthetic ingredients is almost inevitable. Ingredients with SPF, glycolic acid and hyaluronic acid have become staples in many skincare rituals. Here are some good synthetic ingredients you can look out for:RetinolRetinol is a synthetic Vitamin A derivative effective on stimulating collagen, cell turnover and reversing signs of ageing. Start with low concentration to avoid skin irritation. It’s important to note that retinol increases your skin’s sensitivity to sun, so make sure to wear a good SPF during the day. Products containing retinol are unsafe to use during pregnancy.EnzymesAHAs like glycolic acids and BHAs like salicylic acid both act to fight dullness and textured skin. It’s all about experimentation - start small with acids because if they’re overused, they can cause skin irritation and chemical burns. Low concentrations of AHA can be used during pregnancy, but BHAs in general should be avoided. THE BOTTOM LINE Some synthetic ingredients certainly offer anti-ageing benefits, but rest assured there are plenty of natural alternatives that are equally, if not more, effective. There’s no rule saying you can’t use both. They key is to make sure all ingredients you use on your skin are safe, effective and scientifically backed.

There’s a reason we use Rose in so many of our products. PAIGE HASABALLAH’S CREATIVE PROCESS

PAIGE HASABALLAH’S CREATIVE PROCESS

Paige Hasaballah, or Delta Venus to her Instagram followers, is a Melbourne-based artist who draws upon her Egyptian cultural heritage and Australian upbringing to create modern, abstract art. The result is a collection of contemporary paintings that can mean so many different things to different people: the sign of a great artist. In celebration of our latest Adriana Picker-designed limited-edition products – Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense Deluxe Edition and Jurlique Rose Luxe Edition Hand Cream – we spoke to Paige about her own creative process and how she incorporates the products into her own daily routine.Tell us about your work and what you do?I am a visual artist, designer and poet. My work is about the embodiment of light and dark, conscious and subconscious, inner and outer worlds. My aim is to create a space within which people experiencing the work can reflect on themselves. How did you get into this position?Looking back on it I can't help but see some very divine timing. My design work kept me working predominantly on computers or electronic devices, so I had a real pull to work in a more tactile space and use my hands. I have always been really drawn to building or creating with different materials. In late 2017, my family lost our grandmother on my Egyptian side. Within a number of days after she passed, I began painting for the first time in my life. Things took off really quickly from there as I began to publicly share what I was creating with others. Now I see myself as a vessel for the work to flow through and into the lives of others.Describe your process when it comes to your work – how do you tackle a new project?I hold space within myself for the work to move through me. I think of it as a sort of meditation or prayer. A vision will come to me in a dream or a moment of quiet surrender, I pick up water materials I am pulled to and breathe deeply. The work sort of creates itself, it's just my job to get out of the way. What challenges do you face in your work?I think my main challenge is around resisting the natural flow of things. At times I find myself trying to force a piece of art or painting because I think I "should" be doing that. I am yet to force out a piece of work I am happy with. Some days you need to bake a loaf of bread instead or go for a walk in the park or have a glass of wine with a friend. I am constantly reminding myself that magic happens in the flow state. What do you find most rewarding? The most rewarding part of the creative process for me is the way it allows me to connect with others. I have connected with so many incredible people across the world through this practice. Hearing the way one of my pieces inspires someone or prompts them to lean into their own power is the most fulfilling part of my practice.Face Scrub with leaf on a trayWhen you’re experiencing a creative block, how do you get out of it?A year ago, I would have said to push through it. Now my approach is a little more gentle. When I am feeling a creative block, I do something else, I follow the natural flow of my energy. When I am not resisting where it wants to take me, it always brings me back to creating. Some days I just need to detour past a few other things first. What advice would you give to others who are looking to explore their creativity?Get started and start with anything. Be playful with it. Try out different mediums. Don't be too attached to any sort of outcome and just see what comes up. You cannot fail in art, but you are certainly cheating yourself out of the pleasure of creation by holding yourself back.Talk us through how you use your limited edition Jurlique products throughout your dayThe Jurlique Rose Luxe Edition Hand Cream has been an absolute lifesaver for me over the past few weeks. I have been restoring furniture outside of my other creative work and all of that sanding really wears your skin down. Each night and morning I put on the hand cream and it gives them new life! I have been spraying the Rosewater Balancing Mist Intense Deluxe Edition on my face throughout the day as I work. It is the perfect refresher on my skin and gives me that little wake-up call when I am starting to get sluggish.View more of Paige’s work on her Instagram and website.

GUIDE TO MULTI-MASKING

GUIDE TO MULTI-MASKING

We all know what face masks are. Slathering your face is one is a top-tier self-care moment. But why limit ourselves to applying just one when we can prolong that luxurious feeling while also combating different skin concerns by multi-masking?What is multi-masking?More often than not, your skin is doing different things in different areas. You could have oiliness in your t-zone, dehydration in your cheek area and dull skin everywhere else. Multi-masking is exactly as it sounds, it’s using different face masks in different areas of your face at the same time to target those specific concerns.Mask 1: Congested SkinUsually when your skin is congested, it tends to look tired and dull. You’ll find this happens around the t-zone area (forehead, nose and chin). Apply a mask that has a clay ingredient to that area. Our National Education Specialist, Lindsay Adam, says that Green Clay “assists with clearing out the skin of any impurities and breakouts in the t-zone area”. We recommend using our Intense Recovery Mask which is formulated with a base of naturally sourced Green Clay that absorbs impurities and rebalances. It also includes a blend of our farm grown botanical extracts, including Rose Gallica and Chamomile to help restore radiance to your skin once it has been decongested.Mask 2: Sensitive SkinSoothe any redness or irritation on your cheeks with a calming mask. If you have dry or sensitive cheeks, the last thing you’ll want to do is apply something that dries that area out. Our Nurturing Mask will do the trick! Enriched with nourishing plant-based oils including Shea Butter and Jojoba Seed Oil any signs of redness will be reduced leaving your skin feeling soothed and comforted.Mask 3: HydrationPlump and hydrated skin is always the goal. Once you’ve applied and rinsed off your purifying mask in your t-zone and calming mask on your cheeks, you’ll want to bring back moisture to your skin - something your skin will drink up right away. Apply our Rose Moisture Plus Moisturising Cream Mask to your entire face as an intensive overnight treatment. Made with Rose Oil and Shea Butter, it’ll help address visible signs of dehydration, brighten your skin and improve its overall texture. You’ll wake up with more supple and firm looking skin.Hot Tips:If you can’t hop into the shower to rinse off the masks, Lindsay recommends using a wet facial cloth. You know what your skin’s concerns are best, so before you multi-mask, take the time to figure out what each area really needs before applying. You don’t want to apply an astringent mask to your cheeks if they’re sensitive as it’ll exacerbate the problem. Same with applying hydrating products over congested skin – it’ll only make it worse.Don’t neglect your neck and the sides of our mouth. Apply your hydrating mask to this area fill out any lines and creases.Find multi-masking daunting? You can start with the basic and learn the benefits of using a face mask here.

THE BEST NIGHT TIME SKIN CARE ROUTINE FOR ALL SKIN TYPES

THE BEST NIGHT TIME SKIN CARE ROUTINE FOR ALL SKIN TYPES

With a build-up of dirt throughout the day as well as exposure to pollution and daily aggressors, night time is probably the most important time to look after your skin. Skin repairs overnight - during sleep your skin’s circulation and blood flow increases and it will rebuild collagen and renew itself as much as possible - so it’s important to add hardworking products to your evening routine. For the best results, use products that are tailored to your skin concern - that way, you can give your skin the best chance to repair and rejuvenate while you sleep. Discover our nighttime skin care steps for every skin type below. Why you should use different skin care products at night Skin care isn’t one size fits all, and the same goes for using products for daytime vs nighttime. Our Victorian State Manager, Charlotte Lyon, says: “During the day our ritual is all about preparing for the day ahead and protecting our skin against moisture loss and environmental aggressors. Whereas at night it is all about recovering the skin from the day past and harnessing the power of natural botanicals to treat skin concerns and boost radiance in the skin. Double cleansing is a must at night and ensuring that you use serums and moisturisers that focus on optimal absorption to the skin, without creating too much of a barrier.” How to look after your skin at night 1. Cleanse Your skin goes through a lot during the day (makeup, sweat, pollution…the list is endless), so night time is the perfect time to give your face a deep clean. Look for a cleanser with a cream or gel base for an effective clean. 2. Apply a serum Thanks to their lightweight formulas that target specific skin care concerns, serums are an essential part of every ritual, plus they give your skin a much-needed boost of hydration. 3. Moisturise Moisturisers lock in hydration and act as a protective layer on your skin. At night, use a richer formula than you would during the day, that will nourish your skin while you sleep. 4. Apply an eye cream The skin around the eyes is delicate and prone to dryness. It’s also one of the first areas to show signs of ageing, so a nourishing eye cream or gel is important. What products to use for your skin concern Focus on rich, nourishing formulas and targeted treatments. The first step is identifying your skin type: do you have normal, dry, oily or combination skin? If you’re not sure, read our guide to understanding your skin type, then choose specially formulated products that address your skin care concerns too (Is your dry skin congested? Or is anti-ageing a big concern alongside oiliness?) Anti-ageing Skin with visible signs of ageing needs specially formulated products that work to help support collagen and elastin, which give skin its flexibility. For an anti-ageing skin care routine, or to combat the signs of fine lines and wrinkles, we recommend using Nutri-Define Supreme Cleansing Foam, Activating Water Essence+ and Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum, followed by Nutri-Define Supreme Restorative Rich Cream, which is our best night cream for ageing skin. Our Education Manager Charlotte says “as a booster during the week, or for particularly parched skin, add 1-2 drops of the Purely Age Defying Firming Face Oil to your moisturiser to help with elasticity and suppleness. Don’t forget to extend Serums/Creams/Oils to face, neck and décolletage.” Dry skin and hydration Dry skin can look dull and feel tight, dehydrated and rough to touch, so needs skin care products that will lock in hydration. Double cleanse skin first with either Replenishing Cleansing Lotion or Nourishing Cleansing Oil. Follow with our Activating Water Essence+, which is a great hydration booster for skin, and Rare Rose Serum and Cream, which have been clinically proven* to provide 24 hour hydration. Sensitivity  Sensitive skin is easily irritated and prone to drying. It’s important to use specially formulated natural products that restore the skin’s protective barrier and calm and rebalance skin. Thoroughly remove the day using Replenishing Cleansing Lotion twice. The double cleanse will ensure any oils, bacteria or impurities that could exacerbate skin irritation - ensure to use lukewarm or tepid water. We recommend using our Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturising Cream, Calendula Redness Rescue Restorative Treatment Serum and Nurturing Mask to look after your skin at night. Oil and blemish control  If oiliness and blemishes are your biggest concern, treat your skin to our Revitalising Cleansing Gel, which cleanses makeup, oil and impurities in one single step. Charlotte recommends misting with “Sweet Violet & Grapefruit Mist for immediate moisture and then use Activating Water Essence+ for continuous hydration. The lightweight, water-packed formulation is well loved by oily skin.” For a moisturiser, opt for our Rare Rose Lotion, which is lightweight and non-comedogenic. Puffiness and dark circles  Our Nutri-Define Supreme Eye Contour Balm is our best eye cream for lines and puffiness. It uses Snowflake Bulb extract to help restore luminosity, while Alfalfa seed and lupine protein target the appearance of under-eye puffiness. Apply with the metal ball applicator included with the Eye Contour Balm, which helps to smooth, cool and depuff the eye area by aiding lymphatic drainage and promoting optimal absorption of the eye balm itself.   FAQs What should a night skin care routine be? A simple night skin care routine should start with a double cleanse to thoroughly remove the day's impurities. Next, apply a serum tailored to your skin's concerns, followed by a rich night cream to hydrate and replenish your skin while you sleep. Gently pat on an eye cream around your delicate eye area to minimise dark circles and puffiness, and finish by applying a nourishing lip balm or treatment for soft, supple lips. What is good to apply on the face at night? At night, your skin shifts into repair mode, and this peaks while you sleep. Nighttime is the best time to address specific skin concerns like dullness, blemishes, dark circles or those elusive fine lines with targeted treatments. Follow with a rich, nourishing moisturiser to lock in maximum hydration. Remember to apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency for optimal absorption. What is the best serum for a night skincare routine? Our Herbal Recovery Bi-Phase Serum is a best-seller for a reason. Infused with Holy Basil, known as the “elixir of life", Iris root, Echinacea, Black Elderflower and potent antioxidants, this high-performing blend re-energises the skin for a smoother, softer and revitalised look. WHAT IS COLLAGEN AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?

WHAT IS COLLAGEN AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?

Collagen is a word that’s often associated with the holy grail of youthful-looking skin. It can be found in powders, pills and liquid supplements, all with the promise of keeping your skin looking and feeling its best. We’ve all heard of it and no doubt dropped it into conversation…but what is it, what does collagen do and more importantly, do we actually need it? We break down everything you need to know about this beauty buzzword. What is collagen?Collagen is the most common protein that’s found in the body. The word comes from the Greek word kólla which means glue and that’s essentially what collagen is: the ‘glue’ that holds our bones, skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments together. There are at least 28 different types of collagen found around the body. What are the benefits of collagen for skin? The type of collagen that helps us to look youthful is found in the middle layer of the skin. Together with elastin, it strengthens the skin and promotes elasticity, helping it look and feel plump, and prevent it from sagging. Collagen can also reduce dryness in the skin, helping it stay hydrated and give it that glow we all covet. At what age do we start losing collagen? As we reach the age of 20, our bodies start to produce less and less, and collagen is broken down faster than you can make it. In fact, by the time we’ve reached our 40s, we’ve lost approximately 30 per cent of our collagen supply, which is partly the reason we see lines and wrinkles in the skin. But aside from the natural degradation of collagen, there are certain lifestyle habits that can damage it and speed up the process of ageing, such as eating a lot of sugar and refined carbohydrates, too much exposure to the sun and its harmful UV rays, and smoking. How to increase collagenThe good news is that although our skin naturally loses collagen, there are ways we can help increase collagen production through eating nutrient-rich leafy greens and vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower that have high levels of Vitamin C and Sulphur – both of which are essential for collagen production. Skin care products designed to boost collagen help too: our Nutri-Define range contains farm-grown Spilanthes Flower and Horseradish Root extracts that naturally promote collagen production in the skin.Read our guide to increasing collagen naturally for more top tips and shop our full Nutri-Define range for collagen boosting skin care.

WHEN SHOULD I START USING ANTI-AGEING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS?

WHEN SHOULD I START USING ANTI-AGEING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS?

It’s a question that seems to confuse a lot of us: when should you start using anti-ageing products? In your early 20s, before any visible signs of ageing? At 30 or 40? Are there different anti-ageing products you should be using at different life stages? And what are the best anti-ageing treatments? While at Jurlique we believe that every age is beautiful, we also believe in the power that looking after and nourishing your skin can bring. So, we’re here to get rid of the confusion. Read on to find out when and how to start using anti-ageing skin care. When should I start using anti-ageing skin care?In short, it’s never too early. Like with most things, our best anti-ageing tip is that prevention is better than cure, so the earlier you start incorporating targeted anti-ageing skin care into your ritual, the better. Your early 20s is the best time to start, as it will slow down those visible signs of ageing from appearing. But don’t worry if you’re past your early 20s and have yet to use an anti-ageing product – you can still reap the benefits and notice the difference at every age.Which product should I start with? For first signs of ageing: If you're looking to slowly incorporate anti-ageing skin care into your daily ritual, start with the Herbal Recovery Signature Serum and Herbal Recovery Signature Moisturising Lotion or Herbal Recovery Signature Moisturising Cream. With Powerful botanicals and natural-based antioxidants, these products will help to smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles. For visible signs of ageing: If your skin needs deeper hydration and repair, pair the Nutri-Define Supreme Rejuvenating Serum with the Nutri-Define Supreme Restorative Light Cream, and apply the Nutri-Define Supreme Eye Contour Balm to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. For advanced signs of ageing: If you’re already using a serum, night cream and eye cream, try incorporating the Nutri-Define Supreme Cleansing Foam and switching the Light Cream for the Nutri-Define Supreme Restorative Rich Cream to deliver intense hydration.Choose natural anti-ageing ingredientsIf you’ve been a long-time user of Jurlique, you’ll know we value the potent botanicals grown on our biodynamic* farm in South Australia and believe that nature is our greatest source of skin-loving ingredients. Our Nutri-Define range includes natural ingredients such as an extract from the Spilanthes flower, which has been shown to boost the production of Collagen VII and Collagen I, two essential anti-ageing proteins, by up to 46%**. These active ingredients are encapsulated in Biosome6, a unique technology that optimises, stabilises and transports them to the deeper layers of the skin.Age with confidenceWe believe that signs of ageing are not something we should be ashamed or try to hide – and that our imperfections are what make us who we are. Rather, anti-ageing skin care is here to help us celebrate our skin and keep it healthy throughout the years.Explore our Nutri-Define range now, or visit our blog for more skin care tips.*Certified biodynamic by the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia.
