MEET OUR NEW FARM-GROWN BOTANICAL

MEET OUR NEW FARM-GROWN BOTANICAL

We have been growing botanicals on Jurlique’s biodynamic* farm for over 35 years. In 2022, we welcomed skincare favourite Aloe Vera to the farm—the hero ingredient of our Aloe Vera Mist and Hand Cream.

Farm Manager Cherie Hutchinson leads a team who tends to our land in the Adelaide Hills, nurturing an array of botanicals that enrich our nature-inspired skincare. This year, Cherie and her team have worked to propagate, grow, harvest and process our very own Aloe Vera in Jurlique’s greenhouse.

Aloe Vera has few pests and diseases, so all that is needed for our plants to flourish is accurate watering, organic potting soil, and our farm’s Biodynamic* compost. Our Aloe Vera is organically and holistically grown and produced through our own self-sustaining cyclic process.

Propagation

Aloe Vera produces small plantlets called “pups”, which form the base of the main stem. These pups are separated for transplanting by twisting, with developed pups having a few small roots which are easily propagated.

Growing

Aloe Vera enjoys well-draining soil and warm climates, so to protect our plants from our cold, wet winters and heavy soils, we grow Aloe Vera in containers within our greenhouse, using our farm’s Biodynamic* compost to enrich the soil.

Harvest

We harvest the largest Aloe Vera pups, preserving the main stem. This means we can selectively harvest the most tender leaves and promote plant vitality.

Post-harvest

The harvested pups are broken down into individual leaf sections and washed. From here, the leaves are “top and tailed”, sliced longitudinally and diced into 1cm x 1cm cubes.

Extraction

The Aloe Vera gel is then extracted through a maceration process.

This fresh farm-grown Aloe Vera is the foundation of our Aloe Vera Mist and Hand Cream, which work to gently soften, hydrate and comfort skin.
